The port of Townsville has officially launched its 2025-26 cruise season, marking an exciting era for this northern Queensland city. Welcoming the stunning Regatta with over 1,200 passengers and 380 crew members, Townsville is set to receive a record 26 cruise ships this season. This includes seven large-class vessels and two overnight stays, positioning the region as a key player in Australia’s cruise tourism scene.
Infrastructure Improvements Boost Local Economy
One significant reason for this surge in cruise activity is the completion of a substantial $251 million channel upgrade earlier this year. CEO of the Port of Townsville, Ranee Crosby, announced that the improvements will allow larger ships—those longer than 238 meters—access to the port. With some vessels capable of carrying up to 3,000 guests, this is a game-changer for Townsville, effectively tripling the number of visitors coming from a single cruise ship.

Local officials are enthusiastic about the economic benefits this influx of tourists is likely to bring. “Our goal is to highlight the beauty and hospitality of Townsville during the winter months, when we truly shine,” stated Crosby. This cruise season is particularly special as it marks the first-ever overnight stay of a ship called The World, scheduled for December. This suggests a shift in visitors’ expectations and a desire for deeper travel experiences.
