New Wave of Lifesavers: The Excitement of Oceans ’26
For the first time in its quarter-century history, the Oceans '26 Festival of Junior Surf Lifesaving is making waves at Pāpāmoa Beach. Scheduled from February 19 to February 22, this vibrant event showcases over 750 budding surf lifesavers, bringing boundless energy and enthusiasm to the Bay of Plenty. By combining fun and competition, Oceans '26 aims not only to highlight the thrilling disciplines of surfing but also to instill foundational values that already make participants great lifesavers, even at a young age.
A Festival of Teamwork and Lifesaving Skills
Over the course of four action-packed days, competitors will partake in various surf lifesaving challenges including swimming, board paddling, beach sprints, and team relays. Zac Franich, General Manager of Sport for Surf Life Saving New Zealand, emphasizes the importance of teamwork and personal development. "Oceans brings young people together in a positive environment where they learn to back themselves and work as a team," Franich explains. These experiences are crucial for nurturing the next generation of lifeguards—a sentiment echoed by many within the surf lifesaving community.
Strengthening Community Bonds
Besides the thrill of the races, Oceans '26 serves as a community celebration. The event encourages families to gather and support local talents, fostering a sense of pride and camaraderie amongst club members and spectators alike. This year's relocation to Pāpāmoa from Mount Maunganui is a testament to the community’s resilience and cooperation, especially following recent challenging times at the former venue.
The Role of Volunteers in Making Oceans '26 Great
The backbone of the Oceans '26 Festival is its vibrant community of volunteers. From officials and coaches to water safety teams and club supporters, countless individuals contribute their time and energy to create a safe, enjoyable atmosphere for young athletes. This spirit of cooperation ensures that every participant is supported and celebrated, embodying what it means to be part of the larger surf lifesaving family.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Surf Lifesaving
As Oceans '26 approaches, it’s clear that this event reaches beyond just competition; it molds confident individuals ready to face the ocean and its challenges. With competitors taking turns to show their best in the water, this year's festival will not only be a thrilling sight but also a significant step forward in their development as capable lifesavers. Each participant learns the values of perseverance, teamwork, and ocean safety—qualities that will serve them throughout their lives.
The Oceans '26 Festival is an opportunity for all to witness the spirit of youth in action. Whether you're involved in surf lifesaving or simply want to support your local community, this event welcomes everyone to participate and enjoy.
